LongHorn Gluten-Free Menu — How I Order Gluten-Sensitive
I've sat with friends who have to get this right every time. The workable pattern at LongHorn: plain grilled steak or salmon, steamed veg, no fryer, no bread, say "celiac / gluten allergy" out loud. Gluten-sensitive marks help — they are not a force field.
Cross-Contamination Warnings (Read These)
- Shared fryers: Fries and many apps share oil with breaded foods — not celiac-safe in my book.
- Grill & flat-top: Ask for a clean section or foil barrier if the kitchen can accommodate.
- Sauces & marinades: Gluten hides in soy, thickeners, and "house" blends — verify or skip.
- Salad toppings: Croutons, fried onions, and some dressings — order plain and build carefully.
- Bread crumbs on the table: Ask staff not to place the bread basket near your seat.
Usually Safer Categories
| Category | Examples | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Steaks | Renegade, Flo's, Outlaw, Strip, T-Bone, Porterhouse | Plain grilled; verify seasoning/sauces |
| Chicken & seafood | Napa grilled chicken, salmon, Redrock shrimp | No Parmesan crust; confirm glaze |
| Sides | Steamed broccoli, asparagus, plain baked potato | Ask about butter toppings / seasoning |
| Salads | Side salad / field greens | No croutons; dressing verified |

Items I Treat as Off-Limits
- Parmesan Crusted Chicken and any cheese-crust swap onto other proteins
- Texas Tonion, hand-breaded appetizers, and anything from the fryer
- Bread rolls and croutons
- Most desserts unless staff can verify a specific gluten-free option that night
- Spinach artichoke dip and similar apps until the location confirms thickeners
My ordering script
"I have celiac / a gluten allergy. Please do a gluten-sensitive Renegade, medium, steamed broccoli, no sauce, clean grill if you can — and no bread on the table."
Honest caveat: This is an independent guide, not a medical clearance and not LongHorn corporate allergen documentation. Kitchens change recipes. If your reaction risk is high, speak to the manager before you order — and walk away if they sound unsure.
